There are two types of shops you can open.
1. Basic shop - completely free but with limitations. You can only add 50 products and only one of each type of a product. Except for a small logo and a shop description text you have no control over the look of the shop. You can open as many Basic shops as you wish.
2. Premium Shop - you have to pay a small fee (more or less $5 depending on the length of time you are willing to pay in advance) ever month. I see it as rent. Unlimited number of products, as many products of the same type and control over the looks of the store make the Premium Store look very attractive.
Which one to chose?
People who used both Basic and Premium say that for many reasons Premium earns 10x the money a Basic shop brings. Premium sounds like the way to go.
My CafePress Shop tip: If you can afford it, go with Premium right away. If you, for some reason, don't want to invest money at the beginning, make several Basic shops and when you earn enough use the money to upgrade to a Premium shop.

Ways to Make Money on CafePress
There are two basic ways to make money on CafePress.
1. Sell products with your own designs on them.
2. Sell products with other people's designs.
The additional third way is to combine one and two and sell both your own and other people's designs.
If you chose one than you get to be a shopkeeper. If you chose two than you will be an affiliate.
As a shopkeeper you get to make your own designs, put them on various products and mark-up the basic price of each product. Once your product gets sold you keep the mark-up dollars.
As an affiliate, you promote CafePress and the products CafePress offers. If you get someone to go to CafePress and s/he buys something from the marketplace within 30 days than you get 20% of the base price. If s/he becomes a shop owner within those 30 days than you get 5% of the base price of every product s/he sells withing ONE YEAR from joining.
For a creative type of person it would be easier to make money as a shopkeeper. For a natural salesperson, business smart and good in marketing it would be perhaps a bit easier to be an affiliate. HOWEVER, there are no strict rules.

Design for Success - part 2
For me, I decided that I want a store that will stand out, so I avoid the text-shirt fad.
ALSO, take care in whether you choose to chase pop-culture fads or not. Sure, fads can be moneymakers, but you've got to be careful, as it only really pays to be first. If so, watch buzz.yahoo.com like a hawk, and make new designs weekly.
For me, I didn't want to go that route because I wanted *lasting* designs. I want designs that I can sell for years to come, with a huge number of choices. I'm pretty sure that "Runaway Bride" sales have slowed down to a dead zombie trickle about now.
Do what works for you.

Though I personally like small prints, I'm sort of forced to make them a little larger, just so they preview nicely. Well, that varies greatly for your audience, and what kind of stuff they're looking for. Teens want something different than say, Babyboomers. But you knew that, right?
So, I'll tell you what works for me. Bold, graphic and illustrative designs. Now, some of your are artists, and some of your aren't. I'll be honest; if you're a graphic designer or illustrator, you definitely have an advantage, so make use of it! Draw!
If you're not an artist, get clipart! Many of the top selling designs I've seen come from clipart and "dingbat" fonts. Yep. Check dafont.com for tons of ideas. But, if you're feeling more powerful, go buy some from your local art store. There's tons of art out there, use it! Just make sure that you follow the license agreement, so you don't go to jail!
Another reason to go illustrative/graphic, is that there are bajillions of text based designs out there, and they're exceptionally easy to rip off. If you're going to do text based designs, use cool fonts, and arrange the words interestingly. Google "typography" and go to town.

So are you simply looking to buy some unique gifts or are you planning to build your own Name Brand Empire?
The key is to be realistic. There have been several “shops” earning a respectable amount of cash though their products other “shops” enjoy limited exposure and very few or no sales at all. You see, this is the Internet and like anything else in order to generate sales you need to get traffic to your site. For example, there are hundreds of designs showcasing the flag of the USA.
At the time this article was being written, the tag/keyword “USA flag” brings up 8920 designs a total of 170.000 products. You can see how your product can be lost in the crowd. The internal search engine has its own rules and if you have joined Cafepress recently, tagged your design with wrong tags or made no sales then your USA flag design is probably sitting at the bottom of the list and won’t bee seen.
If your design is number 1000th on the list, it's likely it will never be visited - no one goes that deep. There are several ways to work around that - submit your page in the search engines yourself or even generate your own traffic by exchanging links with other shopkeepers. These solutions normally take time, effort and money to accomplish any significant sales. The best way to overcome these growing pains and generate the desirable traffic to your shop is by visiting the cafepress forums and learning from the experiences of the other shopkeepers.
See what they are doing and follow their footsteps. Who knows - one day you might be walking in the street and see a complete stranger wearing one of your t-shirts!
